Acting today to ensure a more sustainable future

Since our origins we have been clear that adequate economic development must be compatible with social commitment and respect for the environment, so that present needs are satisfied without compromising future ones, thus contributing to sustainable development and passing on to society itself part of the benefits that it generates.

Therefore, in line with the company’s values, PortBlue Hotel Group has defined its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, complemented by several specific protocols on Human Rights, Good Labour Practices and Local Community Support.

Permanent monitoring of indicators

In 2013 we began to analyse annually the actions carried out at the level of social contribution and the social and environmental indicators with the tool called Sustainable Indicators, so that our General Management has all the necessary information to ensure the achievement of this Policy and the values of the company.

This tool allows us to carry out an internal analysis at the same time as we can compare ourselves with the average of hotel establishments in the Balearic Islands that use it, as it is useful for a large number of hotels that form part of the Xarxa d’ Hotels Sostenibles de Balears (Sustainable Hotels Network of the Balearic Islands).

Real commitment to the environment 

The flagship of the chain, PortBlue Club Pollentia Resort & Spa, is located on land adjoining the Albufereta Nature Reserve and therefore contemplates a series of requirements that lead it to have regular communications with the General Directorate of Biodiversity of the Balearic Government’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Territory.

The most relevant requirements are the observation of allochthonous plants in peripheral areas of the hotel enclosure in contact with the Reserve, thus avoiding their possible invasion (supervision register by zones), and the promotion of autochthonous species. As well as the maintenance of the services area of the establishment (storage of bulky waste and pruning waste) in a way that does not affect the landscape value of the area.

We also have a collaboration agreement with the Albufereta Nature Reserve and the Balearic Government’s Department of the Environment to donate the amount collected by customers each year, and for our part, the establishment donates the same amount of money collected from customers’ donations, doubling the amount.

Pioneers in the installation of geothermal energy in Mallorca

A decade ago, a heat recovery and geothermal system was installed, the energy recovered from which is used to heat the outdoor spa pool, which is available to sportsmen and women in the winter months. 

Water-cooled cold room compressors were installed, thus making use of the residual temperature. These compressors have two intakes for the use of water, the first one for recovering high temperature heat (up to 60ºC) and the second one for recovering low temperature heat (up to 45ºC).

The high-temperature tap is used in this case to heat the domestic hot water in the kitchen and the low-temperature tap is used in the first instance to preheat the domestic hot water in the kitchen, and once this demand is satisfied, the consumption is diverted via a 3-way valve to the exchanger that heats the outdoor pool-jacuzzi. If, after the waste heat has been used, it is still necessary to dissipate more heat, this is dissipated to the geothermal wells created for this purpose.

The future is moving towards the Circular Economy

With a view to future actions, progress has been planned in the Circular Economy, specifically with the replacement of single-use amenities with refillable dispensers, as well as eco-certified and Km.0 hygiene products.

PortBlue is also working since 2021 on its internal quality management system, to ensure maximum excellence of its processes and services.

New acquisitions, new challenges in sustainability

Within its Expansion Plan for the next 3 years, the chain is contemplating the acquisition of new establishments. 

In order to continue with the philosophy that characterises us, it is planned that with each new hotel that we incorporate into the chain, an analysis of the situation will be carried out to assess the opportunities and plan the actions that are considered necessary to maintain our sustainability standards. 

But undoubtedly, waste management, good environmental practices, daily monitoring of energy and water consumption for the rapid detection of deviations, will be actions that will be decided from the outset.
